Shane, a local magazine reporter, comes from the Ilocano tribe in Northern Luzon - a mountainous region on the Philippines’ largest island. She wears an heirloom necklace (worn here as a headdress) made of beads considered sacred by Ilocano women. Handed down from generation to generation, beads are an integral part of the Ilocano native culture and attire. Likewise, the practice of bead making is intimately associated with their traditions. The necklace and the blouse combine the indigenous costume with colonial Spanish influences. The blouse is called a “barong tagalog” which has evolved from pre-Hispanic native wear to the "Philippines national wear" over the course of more than four centuries.

Bold brush strokes forming the background contrast with the subtle expression on her face; and well-rendered forms describe the head and all the beads. The partially darkened background around her glowing face adds a touch of mystery.
